Environmental Engineer Extraordinaire
Aspired to save the planet, but got stuck defending a polluter?
When you began your career in environmental engineering did you dream of helping to clean up the planet, only to now find yourself working to defend a big polluter? At Corrugated Services, protecting the environment is a core company value, and it has been since the company was founded. CSI started up what was perhaps the world’s most environmentally friendly paper mill in 1974 producing 100% recycled paper with zero effluent. In recent years the company has invested heavily in technologies to improve energy efficiencies, reduce fossil fuel consumption, and dramatically decrease greenhouse gas emissions. If you are a highly skilled and talented environmental engineer who wants to help an industry leader succeed, consider a career at Corrugated Services.
CSI produces over 300,000 tons per year of 100% recycled paper for the box business. Compared to a typical paper mill the company uses 57% less energy, produces 63% less solid waste, and uses 98% less fresh water. In 2008 the company started up a cutting-edge biofuels boiler to provide steam and electricity for the papermaking process by burning waste wood – broken pallets and trim from cabinet manufacturing that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Because the company has had such a limited environmental impact over the years, regulatory compliance has never been a challenging issue. The recordkeeping and reporting requirements associated with the new bioboiler have overwhelmed our capabilities, though, and we now find we are in need of a highly capably environmental engineer.
The right candidate will, of course, have had a solid education in environmental engineering or closely related field and will have worked for at least three to five years on permitting and compliance issues across the spectrum: air, water, storm water, solid waste, etc. In addition to solid credentials in environmental management, the extraordinary engineer we seek will also have demonstrated capabilities to manage significant capital projects aimed at improving environmental performance.
The high-performing environmental engineer at CSI is ready to:
- Ensure that CSI is in full compliance with environmental recordkeeping and reporting requirements at the company’s paper mill in Forney, Texas, and its recycling facilities in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
- Organize the effort to address and correct compliance issues that arise
- Manage projects to improve environmental performance
- Provide technical support for papermaking operations
Corrugated Services is the largest independent producer of recycled containerboard in the United States. The company started in 1974 and has a long track record of success and sustained growth throughout its history. In 2008 the company merged with Orange County Container, its largest customer, and now operates as the paper division of the Orange County Container Group LLC. The combined company has over 2,500 employees and $500 million in annual sales from operations in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, California, and northern Mexico.
